CAC BLAMED FOR CAR DEVICE
01/07/98 11:08 EST

Fringe republicans are being for last night's plan to blast
a town centre in Northern Ireland. Early this morning
British army technical experts defused the 300lbs device
which had been abandoned in a car in Banbridge, County Down
after a warning was called into a radio station.
There has been widespread condemnation of the attack.
Alliance Party leader Lord Alderdice said it was a
reflection of how fast the situation was deteriorating.

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble said it was an attempt
by republicans to destabalise the peace process by provoking
a reaction. The nationalist SDLP has also condemned the
attack, but its deputy leader Seamus Mallon rejected a claim
by Trimble that those responsible operated from the south
Armagh area.

Mallon said: "There is absolutely no proof of that. I think
it is a very dangerous type of assertion to be making, and I
think it's the type of prejorative statement which in itself
could actually cause danger to people on the ground in south
Armagh." Last November the Continuity IRA - which opposes
the peace process - devastated the centre of Markethill,
County Armagh, with a massive bomb. Security sources believe
the same group was behind last night's attack.

* A man shot in a Belfast bar last night is stable in
hospital. The RUC said there was no paramilitary link to the
attack.
